Canine Anxiety problems?
Me and my roommate share a rescued dog, a 1 1/2 old sheltie/greyhound mix. He’s a big, lean, leggy dog, with explosive energy, highly affectionate, but with extreme anxiety problems that make me want to put him on xanax or something before he gives himself a heart attack. He tries to get into the garbage and throw it around, we had to switch to metal dog dishes because he chews the others up, he won’t eat if their is anyone in the room, he’ll spook over NOTHING we can identify and sit right up against your side, shivering and pawing you until you pet him, and if you stop, he starts shivering, and pawing, and looking around like something is about to jump out and eat him.
I heard that bad diet can give greyhounds these problems. Is this true? Would a change in diet help? As it is, we just feed him regular joe kibble.
My family has had and still has Greyhounds for over 50 years. NEVER have I seen one with anxiety. HOWEVER, when I went off to college I got a whippet for a pet. (apt mgr had 20 lb. limit) She was and still is my fave dog of all time, but she was a nut case. She chewed blinds, dug through flooring, beds, chairs, even window trim! She had horrible anxiety issues and I was told by the obedience trainer I took her to that it is very common among whippets. Could your dog be whippet instead of greyhound? Could come from the Sheltie or any other genetic influence too. One thing to keep in mind is tat all dogs at shelters are there because they have a problem. EX: unwanted after outgrowing puppy cuteness, digging up yard and escaping, tears up house so wife says “it’s me or the dog”, bites, etc. I don’t mean that they are BAD dogs, just that they have been in bad circumstances. Your dog may have been abused by it’s previous owner.
Greyhound diet (raw “used cow” meat) gives them bad teeth, not bad nerves.
