How can I overcome shyness? (a little long – sorry )?
I have always been “the quiet one” – not that that is a bad thing, but at points my shyness is unbearably painful and keeps me from living my life.
I do suffer from some depression and anxiety as well, but i feel as though they are mostly because of my shyness. I get the “why do you talk so much, can’t you keep quiet for just a minute” comments which are supposed to be a way of joking around, but to me its just frustrating.
I have been to therapy and have been on all sorts of depression and anxiety meds… none of which really did that much for the shyness. I would love to be more outgoing and have tons of friends, and most of all be able to carry on a conversation with new people that I meet.
Does anyone know of any techniques, or maybe special counselers/programs that could help me? I have the anxiety and phobia workbook which my last doctor gave me but its just the same old stuff…
Comments such as “why do you talk so much, can’t you keep quiet for just a minute” are not normally made by strangers. So I assume that means you’re saying you’re shy in front of your friends. Through my kids I’ve learnt a bit about expressive language disorder, people who have this are normally very quiet in group situations as it takes longer for them to formulate what they want to say in their mind. Have a look at the materials on the web and/or talk to a speech pathologist.
If that’s not the case then it’s a case of practice makes perfect, you need to put yourself out of your comfort zone.
